His true identity is discovered by a now grown-up Basilio while visiting the grave of his mother, Sisa, as Simoun was digging near the grave site for his buried treasures. This time, he does not attempt to fight the authorities through legal means, but through violent revolution using the masses. He cynically sides with the upper classes, encouraging them to commit abuses against the masses to encourage the latter to revolt against the oppressive Spanish colonial regime. Simoun insinuates himself into Manila high society and influences every decision of the Captain-General to mismanage the country’s affairs so that a revolution will break out. Abandoning his idealism, he becomes a cynical saboteur, seeking revenge against the Spanish Philippine system responsible for his misfortunes by plotting a revolution. 6/12/2023 0 Comments Unravel me seriesThis bestselling series from powerhouse author Tahereh Mafi showcases relentlessly thrilling action, heart stopping romance, and a war-torn world in which rebellion is the only path to freedom. Ransom Riggs, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, raved: "A thrilling, high-stakes saga of self-discovery and forbidden love, the Shatter Me series is a must-read for fans of dystopian young-adult literature-or any literature!" Juliette’s world is packed with high-stakes action and tantalizing romance, perfect for fans of the Red Queen series by Victoria Aveyard and the Darkest Minds trilogy by Alexandra Bracken. And perhaps these new allies can help her shed light on the secret behind Adam’s-and Warner’s-immunity to her killer skin. She and Adam were able to escape Warner’s clutches and join up with a group of rebels, many of whom have powers of their own. I am reminded of a parable about theology from Robert Farrar Capon in his book, Hunting the Divine Fox. Yet we speak with such certainty and arrogance, as if we have all knowledge of God. If God truly is as infinite as we claim, then all the compiled knowledge and ideas about God are nothing more than a speck of insight compared to the infinity of God. If you cannot laugh at your own hubris when you teach theology, you should not be teaching theology. When we teach and write about theology, we know next to nothing regarding the topic about which we speak, but we speak about it as if we know everything. Let us remember how ludicrous our carefully packaged systems of theology really are. Then let us all start laughing more, and not just laughing, but laughing at ourselves. Then, let someone stand up and tell us a joke. Let us loosen our ties and untuck our shirts. Let us all sit down and take a deep breath. So let all the shouting, yelling, and finger pointing cease. Seriously though, we theologians often take ourselves way too seriously.īut if historical theology and church tradition teach us anything at all, it is that many of the ideas we have held to most dearly have been the same ideas that have cost the church and the world most dearly. I mean, don’t these guys look like a barrel of laughs? But I am beginning to think theology is not so much a science as it is a form of entertainment. Some like to say that theology is the queen of the sciences. 6/11/2023 0 Comments Harlem shuffle by colson whiteheadI usually do a lighter book and then a heavier book. I mean, you know, it ends up playing out. KING: Is it different in some way, better in some way, emotionally healthier in some way to write a book with less heavy themes? Or does that not really play into it? And so the crime genre, the heist novel allowed me to exercise that muscle once again. "The Underground Railroad" and "Nickel Boys" didn't really have room for some of my strange humor sometimes. Colson Whitehead told me this departure from very heavy themes was kind of a relief.ĬOLSON WHITEHEAD: I like to be able to make my weird jokes, and sometimes the subject matter allows me to do that. But Ray is drawn by family, friends, circumstance and his own ambition into some crooked scenarios, including a heist at the most glamorous hotel in Harlem. His new book, "Harlem Shuffle," is the story of Ray Carney, a furniture salesman trying to walk the straight and narrow in early '60s New York. So it's possible to forget that Colson Whitehead can be very funny. "The Nickel Boys" was about a reform school in Florida where boys were brutalized. "The Underground Railroad" was about slavery and escape. Colson Whitehead's last two books won Pulitzer Prizes. 6/11/2023 0 Comments Hold me closer necromancer seriesWith focus shifting between him, Douglas, Brid, and then later Ramon and Tia, having Sam's POV in the first person was confusing when it would have been just as good written in the third. * the book would have been more pulled together if Sam's narration was in the third person. * the flashbacks slowed down the momentum a little too much * it would have been fun to see more of the critters that appear later in the book * Douglas would have been more interesting if his character was a little more developed * I would have liked to have seen more of Sam's necromancy powers appear earlier on This is probably a 3.5 star book for me, though, since: "So, you're telling me the zoo commissioned you to make a zombie panda in order to avoid a potential international incident." Hah! All the characters are engaging and likable, especially smart-mouthed Sam, strong and beautiful Brid, Sam's little sisters, the.incapacitated Brooke, and the gleefully bizarre Ashley. I have to confess it took me awhile to get to this one because I think the title is a little cheesy (and it's now obviously impossible to get Elton John out of my head), but this turned out to be a hilarious book that had me laughing out loud numerous times-not a bad feat when a big part of the book is about raising the dead. 6/11/2023 0 Comments Dime by er frank"It's pretty graphic, and it's pretty pornographic for seventh-grade boys and girls to be reading," she said. "It doesn't mean my child is sheltered, it doesn't mean I live in a bubble, and it doesn't mean I'm trying to ban books," she said. The mother told local press that this and other passages had made her daughter "uncomfortable", and that the school should have informed parents about the nature of the material. In the upper part, between the outer labia, there's a fold of skin that, on second thought, looks like a kind of blister. They separate when you sit down and they're very red and quite fleshy on the inside. Between your legs there are two soft, cushiony things, also covered with hair, which press together when you're standing, so you can't see what's inside. "When you're standing up, all you see from the front is hair. What's even funnier is that I thought urine came out of the clitoris," wrote Frank. "Until I was 11 or 12, I didn't realise there was a second set of labia on the inside, since you couldn't see them. 6/11/2023 0 Comments Michael todd relationship goalsI don’t know if it’s weird but I really enjoy listening to this woman, and reading her nuggets of wisdom did not feel like a chore. Little Men shows how the girls' families develop, how their lives change and how, in particular, Jo and her professor have their hearts' desire and run 'Plumfield', the boys' school where we meet Nat, Dan and many other characters. The first part of this iconic book series Little.
6/10/2023 0 Comments Father Brown by G.K. ChestertonWithout making excuses for criminals he nevertheless extends forgiveness to them. Of course his dumpy appearance is deceiving and criminals who think to take advantage of the priest soon find themselves outwitted. The most appealing characteristic of Father Brown is not his intelligence, however, but his wisdom and compassion for other people in spite of his keen awareness of the flaws in human nature. Father Brown is unprepossessing and usually underestimated by those who do not know him well: 'he had a face as round and dull as a Norfolk dumpling he had eyes as empty as the North Sea he had several brown-paper parcels which he was quite incapable of collecting' (page 5). Analytical powers aside, though, the two detectives could hardly be more different in character. Even if this isn't an exhaustive collection, there are still plenty of stories, and very delightful they are too.Reading Father Brown is a little bit like turning up a missing volume of Sherlock Holmes - the good Father makes similar brilliant deductions (or would those be inductions?) with his keen powers of observation and logic. For some reason the Librarything link is a misnomer. The actual title of the Wordsworth Classics edition I have is simply Father Brown and it is 'all the favourite' Father Brown stories rather than a complete collection. 6/10/2023 0 Comments Wicked lovely by melissa marrNiall offers Seth the protection of the Dark Court, which means that threats or violence against Seth would be treated as a threat or violence against the court as a whole. Curious about Seth, Sorcha orders Devlin, her brother and advisor, to follow Seth to see if he is any threat to the balance of the Faery courts. Meanwhile, Bananach visits her twin sister, the High Queen Sorcha, telling her of Aislinn and Seth's relationship as well as predictions of impending war. The novel begins with Aislinn and Seth arguing over their relationship, as Seth's mortality, Aislinn's immortality, and her ties to Keenan as the summer queen make a normal relationship near impossible. Like the other novels in the series, it is set in the same universe but focuses on different characters. Fragile Eternity is the third novel in the young adult series, Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr and was published in 2009. |
